Where to find outdoor smallbore upcoming events???

Post by JerryJ »

I am returning to smallbore shooting after 20 years away, and I am focusing on trying to shoot some smallbore prone matches this summer. I live in Easter PA, and I am familiar with the few ranges which hold smallbore prone matches within a few hours of my house.

However, I remember in the old days you could find the listings of upcoming events in all states in magazines like shooting sports USA I believe? Now that we are in the internet age, I would thing it would be easier to find a comprehensive list of NRA sanctioned smallbore prone events around the USA, but I have not found anything like this online.

Am I missing something? Is there a place to find all upcoming events? Please advise.

Thanks,
Jerry

Hi Jerry:

While I primarily compete in Bullseye Pistol competitions, I have found that most matches are small local matches not advertised nationally nor on a nationwide, region wide, or state wide data base.

With that being said, the best way that I have found matches, especially when traveling to new territories, is to do a search for "shooting range", "Gun Club", "Conservation League", etc in Google maps. Once I have identified the gun clubs in the immediate area, I go to their web page and check out the calendar. Most will have contact information which will take a couple of days to establish contact and get a invite to join them, even if it is only for a match of two out of a regular weekly competition. Usually I end up heading out for dinner afterwards with the locals and have friendships in various area's that I regularly travel too.

Regards,
Crankster

Crankythunder pretty much nailed it. There are local club matches. i am in lower Bucks county and two clubs I belong to have smallbore prone matches. Some are mostly for members but if you have interest I will check further.

Many local clubs run unaffiliated matches, so it's always worth looking at their websites. Otherwise...

ASSA - lists all known matches regardless of affiliate, but it's incomplete...
Scroll to the bottom of the page until you see a calendar. That's it.

CMP
This is their generic portal, that contains a "SEARCH COMPETITIONS".
https://thecmp.org/competitions/

This is where the SEARCH COMPETITIONS button takes you.
https://ct.thecmp.org/app/v1/index.php? ... ask=search

NRA
It's a bit buried. Click "UPCOMING COMPETITIVE SHOOTING MATCHES", it will redirect you to what looks like an article, click it's "COMING EVENTS..." title, it will redirect you again. Scroll down a little to an underlined "Coming Events...". Click that and it will open the current month's match listing in the digital Shooting Sports USA magazine. Difficult to find with limited planning potential...
