Ammunition for Ruger MKII

Post by barjo4 »

I am new to this forum and new to bullseye pistol shooting. I recently acquired an older Ruger MKII with a heavy barrel. I have tried Winchester, Remington and Federal Champion ammunition but I get jams with all of them. Is there a bullet that most of you Ruger shooters use? (assuming some of you shoot Rugers)
Thanks, John

Look at the magazine fix here. The leading edge of the rear lips often hits the extracting case rim. I prefer the slope on the lip over lowering the whole magazine.

Also consider the Volquartsen extractor switch.

Have you field-stripped it and given it a good cleaning/light oiling?

In my experience, these guns will shoot just about anything. Except for maybe some of the subsonic stuff.

One "sleeper" for my MKII was Federal Automatch, available at Walmart of all places. About $13.50/325 rounds. And it shot very accurately.

My MKll doesn't like softer ammo like Aguila S/E. It prefers something with a little authority like CCI std velocity. It does OK with high velocity ammo as long as it is not a hollow point.

I believe the problem is solved, thanks to my friend Scott Brady. We were at a practice in Albany and he suggested we swap bolts. After that, the gun functioned perfectly. I had already ordered a new extractor so perhaps that will make the other bolt work too.

Hi

My Mk II wasn't feeding well after a few years, and an extractor helped. The last round always failed to feed, so just as an experiment, I bought a new Mk II magazine at the gun store. Since it worked, I bought new springs for the original two magazines. Now the Ruger works all of the time.
