2008 U.S. Olympic Shooting Team Claims Six Medals, Sets Five Olympic Records in Beijing - BEI­JING, China - The U.S. Olympic Shooting Team turned out an outstanding performance at the 2008 Olympic Games earning six med­als to double the medal count from Athens four years ago. Arguably, the most successful showing for the USA in the history of the Olympic shooting competition, the U.S. Shoot­ing team brought home two Gold, two Silver and two Bronze medals and set a total of five new Olympic records.

18th annual American Legion Junior Air Rifle National Champi­onship - USA SHOOTING RANGE, COLO­RADO SPRINGS, CO – Xentri Garza, a sev­enteen year-old female shooter from Ft. Worth, Texas capped off a championship year to capture the sporter crown at the 18th an­nual American Legion Junior Air Rifle National Championship, August 7-9.

Eastern Junior Highpower Clinic and Championship - The Eastern Jun­ior Highpower Clinic and Championship took place at Camp Butner, North Carolina, on 22-27 June. Sixty-four junior highpower shooters attended this years’ clinic - doubling the num­ber of juniors who attended in 2007.

JROTC Cadets Invade Sarasota, Florida For JROTC Cadet Leader­ship Camp And Newly Introduced Safety & Air Rifle Marksmanship Course - Beginning June 9, 2008 and end­ing June 12, 2008, JROTC Cadets joined to­gether from five area high schools to attend a JROTC Cadet Leadership Camp (JCLC). Now in its 4th year, JROTC Cadets numbering 120 strong were from Booker H.S., Desoto H.S., River H.S., Sarasota H.S., and new this year Zephyrhills H.S. to participate in their summer camp.

IN MEMORIAM. Colonel Jeremiah M. McKenzie, USA, Ret., former Executive Officer at the U. S. Army Marksmanship Unit and Director of the Small Arms Firing School, died on 4 August 2008 in Ten­nessee. He was drafted into the Army in 1942, commissioned in 1943 and served in the Pacific during World War II. COL McKenzie was assigned to U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU), Fort Benning, Georgia, as Ex­ecutive Officer and Director, Small Arms Firing School that the USAMU conducts as part of National Matches at Camp Perry, Ohio. He retired from the Army in 1969 with rank of Colonel. "Mac" rejoined USAMU in 1974 as a Department of the Army civilian employee and functioned as the Executive Officer until he retired in 1986. Jeremiah McKenzie was in­ducted into USAMU Support Hall of Fame in 1982 and the USAMU Hall of Fame in 1996. IN MEMORIAM. Sergeant Tim Curl, USMC, passed on Tuesday, 19 Au­gust as a result of a fatal motorcycle accident. Sergeant Curl shot on the Marine Corps Rifle Team from May 1989 through November 1992 and retired in 2005. He is survived by his wife Beth of 15 years and two children, daughter 23 and son 14. Tim was a good person, and fan­tastic husband and father. He will be missed. Condolences can be sent to the Curl residence at Beth Curl, 31348 Hickory Place, Temecula, CA 92593.


National Youth Shooting Sports Leadership Confer­ence. Junior shooting coaches and club leaders, whether they work at beginning, intermediate or advanced levels, are invited to attend the 2008 National Youth Shooting Sports Leadership Conference at Camp Perry, Ohio on 26-28 September. The conference is an annual opportunity, or­ganized by CMP, NRA and USA Shooting, for junior shooting leaders to catch up on the latest coaching techniques and junior program ideas. The list of presenters includes Ralf Horneber, Sport Director of Germany’s Ba­varian Sport Shooting Federation, National Rifle Coach David Johnson, USA Shooting’s Bob Foth, NRA’s Marcus Raab and CMP Director Gary Anderson. Johnson and Anderson will have eyewitness reports on shoot­ing and the USA’s successes in the Beijing Olympics. Plus there is always plenty of time to network with junior leaders from around the country and learn from them. The conference will take place in the new CMP confer­ence facilities and 80-point electronic target air gun range at Camp Perry. During the week preceding the conference, there are a series of rifle, pistol and shotgun coach training courses available. 2008 Western CMP Games and Creedmoor Cup Matches Ready for Entries - The 2008 Western CMP Games and Creedmoor Cup Matches will take place at the Ben Avery Shooting Facility North of Phoenix, Arizona on 11-19 October. Reports on Olympic Shooting. CMP Director Gary Anderson was in Beijing during the 2008 Olympic shooting events. A series of Anderson's daily reports on each of the 15 Olympic shooting events were posted on the CMP website at http://www.odcmp.com/OlympicShooting.htm. Anyone who is interested in detailed information about the 2008 Olympic shooting events and how the USA Shooting Team members did during the Olympics is invited to review these reports. The reports are posted in chronological order with the most recent reports last and the first reports at the beginning of the sequence.



CMP Videos posted. The CMP recently posted videos featuring our new air rifle ranges. Two videos are from the Junior Air Rifle Olympics that took place in Anniston, Alabama. A third video shows images of the new air CMP air rifle range at Camp Perry and some of the first youth training activities that took place there. The Kent County Rifle Club and Junior Division in Ada, Michigan, will sponsor a CMP sanctioned match September 13, 2008. This will be our inaugural effort to help the M1 for Vets program. We are looking for as many shooters as we can get to raise a large amount of money to help these deserving vets. A two-day, CMP/NRA/USAS air rifle/smallbore Coach School will be held in Union, SC September 13-14th conducted by Paul Davis (LTC-USA ret). The cost, which covers two lunch meals, extensive course material, and three-year certification fee, is $135. The first 8 SC/GA coaches to register will receive a $35 scholarship reimbursement.
