Anti in First for Prone Rifle, Callahan and Turner on Top for Pistol after Second Day of 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Shooting (Smallbore)



FT. BENNING, Ga. (May 14, 2008) – After the second day of competition at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Shooting (Smallbore) Mike Anti (Winterville, N.C.) jumped into the lead in Men’s Prone Rifle, while Libby Callahan (Columbia, S.C.) took over first place for Women’s Sport Pistol and Jason Turner (Rochester, N.Y.) remains on top for Men’s Free Pistol.



Three-time Olympian Anti took over the top spot in Men’s Prone Rifle after a two day total score of 1405.6. Eric Uptagrafft (Spokane, Wash.), a 1996 Olympian, jumped up from third place to second place today with a total score of 1402.6 points. Two-time Olympian Tamas fell from first place down to third place after a two day total of 1402.3. Jason Parker (Omaha, Neb.), a two-time Olympian and 2008 U.S. Olympic Team member in Men’s Air Rifle, remains in fourth place after the second day of competition with a total score of 1399.9 points. Michael McPhail (Darlington, Wis.), the 2008 Beijing World Cup bronze medalist, is in fifth place with 1398.6.



The top five in Men’s Prone Rifle are all members of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU).



In Women’s Sport Pistol, three-time Olympian Callahan jumped on top today with a total of 1561.0 points. Three-time Olympian Beki Snyder (Colorado Springs, Colo.), took over second place with 1552.8 points. Sandra Uptagrafft (Los Angeles, Calif.), the 2007 Pan American Games gold medalist, dropped right behind Snyder in third place with a total score of 1551.7.



Vladimira Borisova (Elgin, Ill.), Elisabeta Nishica (Acworth, Ga.) and Diana Nee (Arcadia, Calif.) continue to hold fourth, fifth and sixth places with total scores of 1535.8, 1534.3 and 1524.6 points respectively.



In Men’s Free Pistol, 2004 Olympian Turner continues to hold the top spot with a total score of 1307.7. Two-time Olympian and USAMU member Daryl Szarenski (Saginaw, Mich.) moved up to second place with 1298.6 points. John Zurek (Chandler, Ariz.) is right behind Szarenski in third place with 1298.5. USAMU member Thomas Rose (Central Point, Ore.) is in fourth place with 1280.4. Rich Gray (Fredericksburg, Va.) is in fifth place with 1275.4 and Jay Shi (Gilbert, Ariz.) is in the sixth spot with 1258.7.



The 2008 U.S. Olympic Team members for Men’s Prone Rifle, Women’s Sport Pistol and Men’s Free Pistol will be determined on Thursday.



Over 170 top rifle and pistol shooters from around the United States are competing for spots on the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Shooting (Smallbore) May 12-22 at Ft. Benning's International Shooting Complex in Columbus, Ga., home of the USAMU. The U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Shooting is a collaborative partnership between the U.S. Olympic Committee and USA Shooting.



In smallbore rifle, there is one U.S. Olympic team spot available for Men's Prone and Men's 3-Position (Matt Emmons has already secured a spot in both Prone and 3P) and there are two spots available in Women's 3-Position. In pistol, there are two U.S. Olympic team spots available for Men's Free Pistol and one spot in Men's Rapid Fire Pistol. There are two spots for Women's Sport Pistol.



The rifle/pistol athletes will be selected to the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team based on a combination of the three days of match scores, plus each athlete’s top two finals scores.
