CMP Announces Two New Program Managers - Dana Bacak-Lynd was recently promoted to Program Manager at CMP. Several of her new program responsibilities are related to juniors including Postal Match Administration, tracking Three-Position Air Rifle National Records, Junior EIC Points and sanctioning Three-Position Air Rifle Matches. All are key programs in CMP’s mission in the advancement of juniors in shooting sports. There is also a new face to the CMP State Junior Directors program and it belongs to Vicki Donoho. While Donoho is a new CMP staff member, she is not new to the CMP. She has four years of experience as a counselor with the CMP Three-Position Air Rifle Summer Camps. She joins her husband, Brad Donoho, who was hired for the CMP Camp Riflery Manager position in July.

Physical Conditioning for Highpower Shooting - By SGT Walter E. Craig - In most sports, body conditioning is an absolute necessity. For example, the need to condition the body to improve strength or speed is obvious for sporting activities such as football, track, or swimming. Conversely, for most civilian highpower shooters, the need to condition the body to maximize shooting performance is generally not a priority. However, body conditioning is very critical to good shooting.

Friends of Camp Perry Supporting Shooters Memorial Plaza - Historic Camp Perry was established in 1906. The National Matches that were founded by an Act of Congress in 1903 were moved to Camp Perry in 1907. The Ohio National Guard post that is located just 5 miles west of Port Clinton, Ohio on State Highway 2 has been the home of the Matches ever since. Each year over six thousand competitors, family members and volunteers who support the Matches travel to Camp Perry to be part of this great national shooting festival and series of national championships. Camp Perry has become hallowed ground to virtually all of these National Matches participants.

On the Long Road - At the Rapid City South Dakota Regional on 30 June 2007 William (Bill) E. Thompson Jr. earned final “leg” points for his Distinguished Pistol Shot Badge. What makes this news exceptional is that Bill was 80 years and 7 months old when he was awarded Distinguished Pistol Shot Badge #1403.

U. S. Army Junior Open State Championship Postal Now Open for Entries. The official program and target order or entry forms for the 2008 U. S. Army Junior Open State Championship Postal Competitions are now posted on the CMP and U. S. Army Marksmanship Unit websites. This competition series is sponsored by the U. S. Army for all junior school-age junior shooters. The first phase of the Army Championship is a State Championship Postal competition in which all junior clubs, JROTC units and other organizations that shoot sporter or precision class air rifles can enter. The sporter class event features a 3x10 course of fire with awards given at the state level for teams and individuals. The precision class event is a 40-shot standing position event with state team and individual awards. State Championship postal firing may be done anytime between now and 15 March 2008. Entry fees are just $5.00 per individual. There is no additional entry fee for teams and team scores are determined by the top four scores fired by juniors in that organization. Participating organizations are encouraged to enter as many juniors as possible to give them the experience of competing in their state championship competitions. The top ten state champion teams qualify for the U. S. Army Junior Open National Championship at Fort Benning in August. Camp Perry Junior Open, 18-19 January 2008. The CMP is hosting the second annual Camp Perry Junior Open three-position air rifle match at Camp Perry, Ohio, on 19 January 2008. A training clinic for interested junior shooters and coaches will be held on Friday evening, 18 January 2008. The program provides for 3x20 sporter and precision class individual and team events for school-age juniors, with all competitors having an opportunity to fire an Olympic-style final at the end of each course. The 2008 competition will be fired in Camp Perry's Bataan Armory, which has a 20 firing point range, but in 2009 the Camp Perry Junior Open will move to a new 80-firing point range being constructed at Camp Perry. Shooting Coaches--Register Now for National Coaches College. It is not too late for anyone who is active in coaching youth or adults in rifle, pistol or shotgun shooting, and who wants to improve their coaching knowledge and skills, to register for the 2007 USAS-CMP-NRA National Coach College and Conference. The Coach College will take place at the U. S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs on 7-9 December 2007. This conference alternates with the National Youth Shooting Sports Leadership Conference that the CMP hosts at Camp Perry, Ohio in even-numbered years. Attendees will have one day devoted to working with the National Coaches and another day and one-half of presentations on shooting and coaching topics. The cost of the Coach College is $150, but this includes housing and meals at the Olympic Training Center. CMP Offers Rifle Clinics. The CMP now offers a limited number of advanced rifle clinics that will be conducted at host clubs in various parts of the country during the fall and winter months. The lead instructor for these new CMP Rifle Clinics is Major Steve Goff, USA (Ret.). Steve was a member of the U. S. Army International Rifle Team for many years, has won numerous international medals and has extensive experience in teaching clinics for the Army team. Two CMP Rifle Clinics have already been held, one for college rifle teams at the Citadel in September and one for junior shooters at the Blue Trail Range in Connecticut in October. Clinic scheduling is flexible, but clinics usually are weekend events involving one and one-half to two days of instruction and coached practice firing. Clubs that are interested in hosting a CMP Rifle Clinic should contact Sommer Wood, CMP Clinic Program Manager, at swood@odcmp.com.
New GSM Master Instructor Class Trained. The most recent class of CMP GSM (Garand, Springfield, Military Rifle) Master Instructors completed their training at the Ben Avery Shooting Facility near Phoenix, Arizona on 19-20 October.
12 new Master Instructors were trained in how to teach CMP sanctioned rifle clinics for new shooters in their CMP-affiliated shooting clubs. CMP Director Gary Anderson, together with Master Instructors Richard Whiting and Lance Miller presented the instruction. Classroom and practical sessions covered how to teach firearms and range safety, range procedures, proper techniques for firing accurate shots and the firing positions used in sanctioned CMP Games matches, prone, sitting, kneeling and standing. Members of the Master Instructor course at Phoenix also acted as on-the-line coaches for students who attended the instructional clinic that preceded the Western CMP Games. The next scheduled CMP GSM Master Instructor class will take place at Camp Perry, Ohio on 26-27 January 2008. CMP was one of the main sponsors for the USPSA Area 63 Gun Championships that was held at Moss Branch Shooting Range in Anniston AL. CMP gave away a brand new Kimber .22 for a competitor who placed in the top of the open division. Dean Makkos who is shown in the picture came in 2nd in the open division. Last year CMP gave away an M-1 Garand to Jeff Cramblit.

During the past fiscal year, the CMP not only provided firearm safety and marksmanship training programs to fulfill its mission, but it continued to support major Armed Services marksmanship training endeavors with staff and volunteer expertise and funding. 2007 was an outstanding year of accomplishment and growth for the Corporation; we trust these successes are reflected in the data, records and illustrations in our annual report.

100th Anniversary Bushmaster Limited Edition Still Available. Bushmaster Firearms Intl. LLC is selling Limited Edition 100th Anniversary Camp Perry National Match DCM-XR Series Rifles. From the proceeds of each Anniversary Rifle sold, Bushmaster is donating $100.00 to the Civilian Marksmanship Program’s Junior Highpower Support Program. Only 100 of these 100th Anniversary Camp Perry National Match DCM-XR Series Rifles will be built, and they feature commemorative laser engraved markings. These unique rifles may still be ordered at a special price of $960.00. As all are expected to be sold, Bushmaster’s total contribution to the CMP Junior Highpower Support Program is projected to be $10,000. Orders may be placed by contacting Bushmaster (1-800-998-7928, or http://www.bushmaster.com) and by law; all rifles must be transferred through an FFL Dealer.
2007-2008 JROTC Postals. The JROTC Postals are now underway. Complete programs and entry information are posted on the CMP web site at http://www.odcmp.com/3P/JROTC.htm. All JROTC instructors are encouraged to get their postal target orders in if they have not already done so. The deadline to send in Postal Entry Forms is 26 Nov 07. All firing must be completed and targets must be postmarked no later than 04 Dec 07. Any targets received after 14 Dec 07 will not be considered. Results will be posted on the CMP web site at http://clubs.odcmp.com/results as soon as targets are received and scored by CMP. Results will be final on 18 Dec 07; scoring challenges cannot be submitted after that date.
