Hello,

I wanted to know what is the best lenght for 50m prone 690 or 500mm barrel and why would you choose either (i.e. advantage / disadvantage)

The shorter 500mm barrels were said to offer better handling (mostly standing due to the change of balance). In terms of accuracy the shorter barrel should be stiffer, making vibrations more consistent; it would also a shorter barrel time.

However the short barrel requires an extension tube to restore the sight radius to normal.

Some shooters beleive that the short barrels can be affceted by the propellant gasses which have not settled down (for want of a better term) and which, when confined into the extension tube, can upset the bullet.

It is thought that in longer barrels the gasses lose more of their potency and do not disturb the bullet on its exit.

I have had 50 and 69 cm barrels in a Anschütz 2013.
With the original 50 cm barrel I shot easier than with the 69 one but groupings was relatively opened . That did not prevent me to make 595 points in prone.
The cleaning of the extension tube is critical for this size.
The present 69 cm Lilja barrel gives closed groupings.

The guy that won the last Olympics in 3-P uses a rifle with a short barrel.
Most other competitors in the final uses a long barrel rifle.
