At the IPC (Paralympic) Shooting World Cup in Sydney, AUS the US team had a much better showing on day 2. The highlight was a great gold medal winning performance by OTC resident Mike Tagliapietra in the P3 Sport Pistol competition. After a shaky start in the precision phase shooting only 275, he recovered nicely with a 287 in rapid fire to make it into the final. Once there, he had a dominant performance with the high score in the semi-final (15/25 hits). That put him into the gold medal match head to head with world #1 ranked Huang, Xing from CHN. Mike won all but the third round to quickly finish off Huang 8 – 2.
“Mike has qualified for every final in that event for over a year now and has used that experience to learn how to shoot well in the finals. Timing for his first World Cup gold medal is excellent with the Paralympic Games in Rio just 1 year away. I was proud of the way he battled back from a slow start then just crushed the field once in the finals rounds” – Bob Foth
AMU shooter Shaun Tichenor returned to P3 competition, finishing 14th with a 547, good enough for a Minimum Qualifying Score (MQS) for Rio 2016 eligibility
In the R4 Air Rifle Standing SH2 event, Mckenna Dahl finished 28th and Israel Del Toro was 33rd.
Yesterday, Tammy Delano fired her MQS in the R2 Air Rifle Standing Women event firing 399.2 to finish 13th. Other US athletes included Nick Beach 20th in R1 Air Rifle Standing Men and Mike Tagliapietra (7th) and Len Esparza (13th) in P5 Air Pistol Standard.
