Men's Three Position Rifle Competitors Selected for World Championship

Colorado Springs, Colo. (May 22, 2014) - The Spring Selection Match for Rifle/Pistol wrapped today in Fort Benning, Ga. as competitors for the Men’s Three-Position Rifle event at the International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF) World Championship in September were selected. Representing the United States at the World Championship will be 2012 Olympic bronze medalist Matt Emmons (Browns Mills, N.J.), 2014 NCAA Smallbore Rifle Champion Tim Sherry (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and 2012 Olympian Michael McPhail (Darlington, Wis. /U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit).

Thirty rifle and pistol slots were up for grabs at the two-week Selection Match as competitors were determined for the upcoming ISSF World Cups in Munich, Germany, Maribor, Slovenia, and most importantly, the World Championships in Granada, Spain in September.

Emmons won the Men’s Three-Position Rifle event, finishing with a commanding 16 points ahead of second-place finisher Sherry. Sherry was able to overtake the second position from McPhail with a second-place finish in today’s Final. Additional points – eight points for first, seven for second and so on – were awarded for an athlete’s finish in the Finals on top of qualifying scores for each of the three days of competition. McPhail finished in third place in today’s final as well as third place overall.

Emmons and McPhail will also be competing in Prone Rifle at this World Championships - slots they earned at this Selection Match last week. Rifle and pistol athletes who earned slots on this World Championship team at the Spring Selection Match are listed below.

Shotgun competitors for the remaining World Cups and World Championships were determined at their Spring Selection Match back in March in Kerrville, Texas. Follow the link to read about the Shotgun Selection Match and who will be representing the United States: http://content.yudu.com/A2uav3/May2014/resources/29.htm.

Another 30 junior-level athletes will be added to the team following final selection at the USA Shooting National Championships in Fort Benning, Ga. in late June. The 90-person squad is easily the largest USA Shooting team assembled every four years.
