Is it true: 5moa covers black at 50 and 25yd?

Post by Xman »

I was reading somewhere on TT that 5moa dots completely cover the black of 50 and 25 yard targets, giving an advantage to the 3 and 2 MOA units.

I am on the cusp of buying a red dot 5moa Trueglo or Tasco unit and dont need big buyers remorse right out of the box.

Did I miss read or misinterpret the post?

Thanks

Not even close. I have an UltraDot II that goes to 8MOA (I think it has 2,4,6 and 8) and at 25 yards it doesn't come remotely close to covering the black on a B16. It might cover the 10 ring at 8MOA, but I think it probably goes into the 9 at that point. No larger though...best guess. FWIW I tend to use the 4 and 6 the most.

5 moa at 25 yards is 1.25", X ring on 25 yard timed and rapid is 1.695", black is 5.54". 10 ring on 25 yard slow is 1.51", black is 5.32"

5 moa at 50 yards is 2.5", X ring on 50 yard slow is 1.695", black is 8".

You'd need more than 22 moa to cover the black at 25 yards and 16 at 50.

Many think the smaller dots will allow them to aim more accurately. They probably would if the shooter could hold the gun still. Larger dots are easier to shoot well.

I suppose that depends on whether you focus on the dot or the target. If you focus on the target, as Zins recommends, a larger dot just obscures more of it.
